The Secret Life of the American Teenager aired on ABC on July 1, 2008. In the beginning, the series was bashed by critics but it struck a chord with the female and teenage population quickly making it the show to watch. The teenage drama follows the lives of teens and the secrets they keep to themselves. The show focused its first season on Amy Jurgens (Shailene Woodley) and the fact that she gets pregnant at band camp. The pregnancy is looked at from the perspective of how it affects her parent’s already struggling marriage and her relationships with her peers, boyfriend, the father of her child, and her little sister. The one thing her pregnancy does do is make her realize that every teenager at her school has a secret they don’t share with the rest of the world. The show is about revealing those secrets, keeping your friends, and having a lot of drama to go along with it. Amy is your typical 15 year old girl until she gets pregnant after having sex one time; the pregnancy has consequences for not only her and Ricky, but her own family, friends, and Amy’s life expectations as well. Throughout the seasons the show follows Amy, Ricky and their friends from high school into college. They face trials and tribulations from Amy and Ricky trying to raise their son to the struggling marriage of Amy’s parents. India Eisley plays Amy’s two years younger sister Ashley who during most of the show is trying to find her way. She is sarcastic, dresses mostly in black, and has a crush on the father of her sister’s child. No matter which age group you fall into on this show, the drama just keeps on coming. From Amy and Ricky’s struggles to balance school and parenthood, to Ashley coping with her parents problems something is always going on in The Secret Life Of The American Teenager.
