Awkward is a word that could be used to describe many events or feelings in a teen’s life. It’s especially apt in the chronically misunderstood Jenna Hamilton, who is constantly trying to define who she is to herself and to others, with others being far from understanding her true intentions. In perhaps the biggest of all misunderstandings, Jenna is involved in an accident through no idea of her own that everyone else she knows firmly believes is an attempt to take her own life. The resulting attention is a double-edged sword, since Jenna is a smart girl who just wants to fit in, and now she fits in with more people than she ever imagined would be possible, but the awkwardness doesn’t end there. Jenna is surrounded by others who have their own awkward issues. Matty McKibben is the boy of Jenna’s dreams and in fact the two had a fling at summer camp, but Matty is so concerned with his social image that he insists that his and Jenna’s relationship remain a closely guarded secret. Lacey, Jenna’s mother, is more interested in her next plastic surgery session than she is in anything having to do with her daughter. Tamara is Jenna’s best friend, someone who is not shy about letting her feelings be known. Awkward is a comedy that deals with issues of identity from a teen perspective. Jenna’s personality and identity are now being formed and she is forced to ask herself if who she is likely become is who she really wants to be. She may be getting the attention she always wanted, but will it change her for the worse or for the better? She and the audience and can only watch and see and laugh along with all the awkward moments that are bound to crop up.
